Overview
Researchers from outside Europe can join a European research team through the Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowships (IIF). The scheme is funded by the EU and pays for a research project that transfers knowledge into a host organisation in Europe. It also builds research links between Europe and the rest of the world, and helps you move your career forward.
Awarded by
Universities, research centres or companies in the EU.
Subjects and level
Any area of scientific and technological research that interests the EU may qualify for IIF funding. One exception applies: research areas covered by the EURATOM Treaty cannot be funded.

Who can apply
Researchers from developing countries
What the award covers
An IIF funds a research project that brings knowledge into your host organisation and strengthens collaboration between Europe and other regions. The project also supports your own career development. Financial support runs for 12 to 24 months (full-time equivalent).
With this funding you can:
- join a European research team that does not have your experience
- set up a collaboration through a research project with your lab or your country
- gain new knowledge in a European lab
Your IIF may also cover a return phase of up to one year. You spend this period back in your country of origin, applying what you learned. To qualify for a return phase, you must come from one of the International Cooperation Partner Countries. If you want a return phase, include its details in your initial application. You must also name the potential return host organisation in your country of origin.
Eligibility requirements
- Researchers from Third Countries can apply for an IIF. Third Countries are those that are neither EU Member States nor Associated Countries.
- You must hold a doctoral degree or have at least 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience after a degree that allowed you to start a doctorate. This is the minimum; more experience improves your chances of being accepted.
- Apply together with the organisation or institution willing to host you in Europe. Host organisations can be universities, research centres or companies.
Note: The complete eligibility criteria are in the work programme, which you can download from the call page.
