What the award covers
For a master's degree, funding covers the standard period of study of your programme, up to a maximum of 24 months. If you are already in Germany in the first year of a master's course when you apply, you may request funding for your second year only; the scholarship cannot be extended.
For a complementary course that does not lead to a final qualification, the scholarship runs for 1 academic year.
All scholars receive a monthly stipend of € 850, a travel allowance, a one-off study allowance, and payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance. In certain circumstances, scholars may also get a monthly rent subsidy and a monthly allowance for accompanying family members.
DAAD also pays the course fees for the online language course “Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO)” for 6 months after you receive the Scholarship Award Letter. If needed, DAAD covers German language courses of 2, 4 or 6 months before your study visit. You must attend a language course if German is the language of instruction or working language at your host institution.
If your master's or postgraduate programme includes a study period abroad, funding for that period is usually possible only if:
• The study visit is essential for achieving the scholarship objective.
• The study period is no longer than a quarter of the scholarship period. Longer periods cannot be funded, even partially.
• The study period does not take place in your home country.
Eligibility requirements
You must hold a bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Monument Conservation, Urban Planning/Urban Development, Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, or Landscape Planning. Your final examinations must have been taken no longer than 6 years before the application deadline. Applicants who have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months are not eligible.
Language skills: in architecture, you need knowledge of the language of instruction that meets the chosen university's requirements. If you do not yet have the required language skills when you apply for the scholarship, your application should show how you plan to reach that level.
How to apply
Applications are currently closed.
Along with the application form, you must submit work samples; these are used to decide acceptance. A scholarship confirmation does not guarantee admission to the host university, so you must apply directly to the university and check its application deadline for your course. The application deadline is 30 September 2020.
