Deutschlandstipendium Scholarship at German Universities (German Government)

Deutschlandstipendium Scholarship at German Universities (German Government)

Overview

Germany's Deutschlandstipendium pays €300 each month to high-achieving Bachelor's and Master's students at public and state-recognised universities. It is the country's largest public-private partnership scholarship programme. Private sponsors and many universities add mentoring, networking events and internships alongside the money. Students from anywhere in the world can apply.

Who should apply

This award suits strong students who are already enrolled at a German university or about to start there, and who can show more than good grades. Civic engagement and personal achievements count, and so does a social or family background that required the applicant to overcome obstacles.

Both first-semester and higher-semester students of any nationality qualify, so you do not need to wait until a later year of study to apply.

What the award covers

Each scholar receives €300 per month. Private sponsors supply €150 and the Federal Government supplies the other €150. Your personal or parental income does not affect the award, and your nationality is not material to the award either. The scholarship funds do not count towards grants awarded under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), and no social insurance contributions are payable.

Funding is normally granted for at least 2 semesters, and may run for a maximum period that covers the standard period of study. Every 2 semesters the university checks two things: whether you still meet the award criteria, and whether private funding will continue to be available.

Many universities and private sponsors also offer non-financial support such as mentoring programmes, networking events and internships.

Eligibility requirements

Excellent academic results are the starting point, but they are not the only criterion. The selection also weighs social commitment and personal achievements, such as overcoming challenges or obstacles in your social or family background. Your social and family background is therefore taken into account.

Both students who are already enrolled and students who are about to begin their studies are eligible. Applicants must meet the requirements of the individual institution.

How to apply

First-semester and higher-semester students of all nationalities apply directly to their university. The Deutschlandstipendium is awarded by the universities, and each university runs its own selection process. Deadlines differ from one university to the next, so check the date with your own institution.
