Government money: MEXT, ADB-JSP and JDS

The Japanese Government funds three separate routes. The MEXT research scholarship pays 143,000 yen a month for research students, 144,000 for Master's and 145,000 for doctoral students, with deadlines varying per country. The undergraduate MEXT award is the only Bachelor's entry on the list: 117,000 yen a month plus tuition and travel. The JDS scholarship covers tuition, admission fees, accommodation and daily expenses for nationals of ten named Asian countries. The ADB-Japan programme requires admission to an approved Master's course first and is limited to ADB borrowing member nationals.

University and foundation awards: stipends tied to one campus

Waseda University carries two awards. YKK Leaders 21 pays tuition, 200,000 JPY a month and a round-trip air ticket for up to two years at Master's level, open to nationals of South East, South, West and Central Asia, Africa and Mongolia. Ting Hsin pays 1,500,000 JPY a year for 24 months but only to citizens of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macau living there when they apply. At GRIPS, GRIPS scholarships cover fees, stipend, insurance and air tickets, and GRIPS decides which award you get. The MEXT Young Leaders Program at GRIPS pays 242,000 yen a month but needs three years of full-time public-sector work experience.

Sustainability, engineering and peace: the specialised awards

Japan's development-focused awards cluster around sustainability and engineering. Both JFUNU awards, the MSc scholarship and the PhD scholarship, pay 120,000 JPY a month (24 and 36 months respectively) and waive tuition, but you cover travel, visa and insurance. Both are limited to citizens of developing countries on the latest OECD DAC list. The KUT Special Scholarship waives the 30,000 yen exam fee, 300,000 yen enrolment fee and 535,800 yen annual tuition, adds 150,000 yen a month and 150,000 yen for travel, and caps applicants at 35. The Rotary Peace Fellowship is the one open-field award here, requiring three years of related work experience for the Master's route.
